Andre Reitenbach (Gcore): From Luxembourg Startup to Global AI Infrastructure Leader

Founded in Luxembourg in 2014, Gcore has evolved from a niche content delivery provider into a global technology company operating a highly distributed edge infrastructure. CEO and Co-Founder Andre Reitenbach reflects on the company’s journey and on how Luxembourg contributed to the development of a company now active in AI and cloud infrastructure.

Gcore recently celebrated its 12th anniversary. How did the company evolve from a CDN provider into a global technology player?

Gcore started as a content delivery network focused primarily on the gaming industry. At the time, the challenge was simple but demanding: delivering digital content to users anywhere in the world with speed and reliability. Over the years, the company has built a distributed infrastructure that now spans more than 210 points of presence across six continents.

What began as a network designed for performance gradually became the foundation for a broader range of services. As the infrastructure matured, Gcore expanded into edge computing, cloud services and security. This evolution was not a sudden pivot but rather a gradual progression. Once a company operates a global network with extremely low latency and high reliability, it can support a wide range of digital services.

Today, that infrastructure supports not only content delivery but also AI workloads, enterprise cloud solutions and digital applications used by organisations worldwide.

In recent years, Gcore has increasingly been described as a European alternative to hyperscalers. Why did the company choose to focus on AI?

Artificial intelligence is becoming a key technology across many industries. At the same time, much of today’s global AI infrastructure is concentrated among a small number of hyperscalers, particularly in the United States. According to Reitenbach, this situation highlights the need for additional infrastructure providers.

“That is why Gcore started investing in AI early. We began building GPU cloud infrastructure in 2021, well before tools like ChatGPT brought AI into the public spotlight.”

The company aims to contribute to the development of a European alternative to hyperscale infrastructure providers. Because Gcore already operates a global and highly distributed network, expanding into AI represented a logical next step. This infrastructure now allows organisations to develop and run AI solutions while maintaining control over their data and digital infrastructure.

“Expanding into AI represented a logical next step.”

Luxembourg is often described as a strategic hub for international technology companies. How has the country contributed to Gcore’s global success?

Luxembourg has played an important role in Gcore’s development. The country offers a strong international outlook, a stable regulatory environment and a longstanding commitment to innovation and digital infrastructure. For technology companies with global ambitions, these factors can be particularly important.

From Luxembourg, the company has built connections across Europe and beyond while benefiting from a supportive ecosystem for technology businesses. The country’s focus on digital
transformation and data infrastructure also aligns closely with the services Gcore develops.

At the same time, the company’s trajectory reflects Luxembourg’s broader entrepreneurial ecosystem, where international startups can grow into global technology providers serving enterprises, governments and developers around the world.

Twelve years after its founding, Gcore operates a widely distributed edge infrastructure and continues to expand its AI, cloud, security and networking capabilities. While the company
now operates globally, Luxembourg remains central to its development and long-term strategy.
