Adapting to the times is crucial in any industry. We talked with Maximilian Chorus and Max Neumann, Co-Managing Directors of Streff, about how their moving company has evolved over a century.

What is Streff and where has your company come from?

Streff is a family business founded in 1928 as a moving and transportation company. Since then, we’ve grown into Luxembourg’s market leader in moving, while developing activities that grew organically out of the business, such as storage, archiving, destruction and digitalization. We’ve always adjusted to our clients’ needs, from moving to archiving to storage, and in the last couple of years we’ve also intensified our last mile services. Listening to our customers, hearing what they say and making it happen, has let us grow from a small business in blv. Grande-Duchesse Charlotte, with one office and a truck, into a company with 130 employees, roughly 30 vehicles and three locations with a total of six warehouses.

What challenges and opportunities do you see in the market today?

The housing market in Luxembourg is slowing down, as people move around less because it is more expensive, and that's a challenge for the moving side of the business. In archiving, people work digitally more, so there's less paper to deal with. Paper volumes are decreasing, but other opportunities arise from that, especially digitalizing existing paperwork or offering new services related to those activities. The combination of sustainability and technological improvements also has an impact. We’re investing in electric vehicles and plan to decarbonize all of our activities by 20% of CO2e emissions by 2027. Whether it’s electric vehicles, digitalization work, or digitalizing our internal processes, we keep moving with the times.

What’s your vision for the next five years?

To keep growing organically by listening to customers and providing additional services that arise from what we’re already offering. That’s how we got into last mile services and digitalization, and it’s the future of our business. But moving will always stay central, as that’s something that cannot be replaced. We're talking about digitalization, but you need people behind it to lift the boxes and transport things by truck, train or ship. Of course, that doesn’t mean rejecting technology. When organizing a move, we offer a digital survey where you get out your phone, you walk around with your camera, and an AI analyses everything to estimate how much has to be moved and what material is necessary for that. That makes the survey more efficient for you and for us. The two of us recently took over the management of Streff, the fifth generation of the family in the moving industry, and we’re keen to see it thrive for many more generations.
