Luc Neuberg and Michael Derwael (ALRiM): Reshaping Risk Culture in Luxembourg

Luc Neuberg, Chairman of the Board of Directors, and Michael Derwael, Board Director, discuss how global and transversal risks, from geopolitics to climate change, are shaping the priorities of Luxembourg’s investment and risk management professionals.

How is ALRiM supporting the Luxembourg risk management industry?

Back in 1997 and ALRiM’s launch, risk management was primarily an area of expertise dedicated to financial quants. The evolution of the regulatory landscape and the integration of global and connected economies have gradually changed the profile of risk managers. Today’s risk managers’ skill set requires an upgraded function able to translate complex real economy issues into preventive market impacts, both under normal and stressed market conditions.  Supporting risk management professionals in approaching real economy themes is ALRiM’s core mission: What are the impacts of the US trade tariffs on financial instruments’ prices? Are current companies’ valuations in public and private markets overpriced? What are the risks and opportunities linked to the rapid rise of AI and DeepSeek-type technologies? ALRiM provides a platform for the exchange of experience and ideas about managing risk in the asset management, banking, insurance/pension and corporate industries. The large-scale conferences are extensions to the workshop-style meetings (“Risk Talks”) and complete the training and development needs offered by the Risk Academy.

The audience primarily attracts risk managers, C-suite executives and corporate and financial industry participants. Courses cover major risk types (e.g., market risk, liquidity risk, credit and counterparty risk, operational risk, sustainability risk) and are all “Made in Luxembourg”. What is on ALRiM’s agenda in 2025?

ALRiM is set for a fresh new look with more visibility on LinkedIn and a redesigned website and logo to come shortly. Upcoming events include a joint conference on Anti-Money Laundering and Counter Terrorist Financing (AML/CTF) on 30 April 2025, the ALFI – ALRiM European Risk Management Conference on 12 June 2025, and the Annual Banking Risk Management Conference towards year-end. The financial training and education program of the Risk Academy, launched in April, is gradually enriched to cover key risk management themes with the support of leading academic and regulatory bodies. Within a global and comprehensive risk agenda, ALRiM takes the driving seat to support its members in navigating through volatile times and creating opportunities for their companies.
